Ajo

Ajo is a small town in southern Arizona where I was fortunate to spend a couple weeks in the fall of 2018 as an artist-in-residence. Although Ajo is a Spanish word for garlic, the town’s name may instead come from a Tohono O’odham word for paint (o’oho) because native peoples obtained red paint pigment in the area. I made these photographs off the loop road that runs around Ajo through the Sonoran Desert – with color on my mind.
